HVAC 101: Types of Filters

March 10, 2021 | Blog

Remember when you were a kid, and you would see all of those particles flying around in the sunlight beaming through your window? Well, those particles flying around are just a small part of all of the different types of air pollutants that you are breathing on a daily basis. Before you freak out, you can rest assured that the air purifiers and filters in your home are on the case and working to make your home a healthier place. There are all kinds of filters and air purifiers that would be a perfect fit for your home, you just have to find the right one for you.

Standard Air Filter

Standard air filters tend to be the most common kind of air filters that are in your home. Running for typically $6 in stores, this seems to be the easiest and cheapest option for homeowners. It is recommended to change your air filters every month since the typical size of the standard air filter can range anywhere from one to six inches in depth. While even the smallest size does the job, it is beneficial for you to change it every month for an optimal opportunity for cleaner air.

Media Air Filter

Media air filters are a little bit different when compared to standard air filters and that mostly comes from the size of the filters. These air filters typically tend to run in the size of 20x25x4. It is made of a paper-like material that is deeply pleated to aid in the removal of pet dander, dust and other particles. Unlike the standard air filter, you can leave this filter in for about six to twelve months depending on how dirty it gets in a certain amount of time.

Electrostatic Air Filter

Electrostatic air filters are different from standard air filters because they are permanent air filters. Instead of replacing the filter every month or every six to twelve months, you simply just remove the air filter and take it outside to hose it off with some water. After letting it completely dry, you take it back inside and put it back. It’s as simple as that! It removes just as much, if not more, pollutants from the air and you don’t have to worry about buying a brand-new filter every month.

Air Purifiers

Bad air quality in your home can lead to smaller health problems that usually come in the form of allergies, like a stuffy nose or maybe even a small cough. Most of the particles in the air are not things that you need to be extremely worried about, but you still want to make sure the air in your home is as pure as you can make it. Air purifiers work by using a small fan that sucks in the air from your home and sending it through multiple filters. As the air moves through the filters, the particles are captured in the filter while the clean air is pushed back out into your living space.

When trying to decide what kind of filter you want for your home, it all comes down to how much work you’re willing to do and how much you are willing to spend. If you don’t mind the monthly maintenance and want a cheaper price, a standard air filter is the way to go. If you’re willing to invest in something that’s a little more long-term, an electrostatic or media air filter might be your best bet.
